Taking Steps Towards Personal Safety and Development

Kenyon Season 1 Episode 3

Could you be a safety professional without even knowing it? My name is Kenyon Manley, safety manager and your guide to uncovering the profound impact that servant leadership has in our day-to-day lives. This episode is a deep dive into the roles many of us unintentionally play as safety professionals, from parenthood to pastoral roles, and the critical decisions we make that affect those around us. I also discuss the importance of personal growth, self-care, and getting to the root of our issues to ensure we are equipped to serve effectively.

However, understanding our roles and responsibilities is only half the battle. The second part of this episode emphasizes the importance of taking actionable steps towards personal development and safety. Our influence on others is immense, and it’s vital to confront and overcome the obstacles that hold us back. No action is too small, whether it's reading, tuning into a podcast, seeking professional advice, or even just a conversation with a friend. Speaker 1:

we're in. Wow, wow, wow it's here. I'm so, so, so, so thankful for this opportunity that I've been able to give myself in a sense of reaching outside of things I don't usually do, but I've been so excited ever since I was given a vision of what I could do in my space. If you don't know me, my name is Kenyon Manley. I'm a safety manager. I've been in safety since like 1997. And the reason why I say that is because I've always been over people in charge of people, people up under me, that their health and welfare, their well-being, their character, everything was, everything was. I was accountable for it. I want to make sure I say the same, the right words I was accountable for all those things. So I truly believe that my safety career started earlier than I would have ever thought, until I actually moved back and saw what I was already doing. And when I look about that, I look out there and I think about you, the one who's listening in right now, you, the person who is a safety professional. What's a safety professional? A safety professional is a mother, a father, a safety manager, safety coordinator, a nurse, a firefighter, law enforcement agent, a surgeon, a pastor, a project manager, a superintendent, a foreman. Those are just some of the safety professionals that right now that I can think of, just to rattle off so that you can get an idea of what this podcast that I'm getting here into is going to be reaching out to. And it's going to be those types of people and I'm reaching out to that on this platform because if you have any of those careers, any of those occupations, any of those identifiers titles, you're a servant leader and you have to be able to serve somebody day in and day out. Every single one of those that I mentioned safety professionals have a critical job or a critical part to play in that aspect.

Speaker 1:

One thing that must happen between those two things is there has to be a separation between you and the people that you're serving. And I want to separate those because I want to talk about the self-help, I want to talk about the looking in the mirror. I want to talk about the getting booty butt naked. I want to talk about you really challenging yourself to excel, to reach your ceiling, but the only way that you're going to begin to go to the next level or excel or exceed in such a manner is that you're going to have to take care of issues that you have within your life, because I'm going to talk about some things that will relate to why this is such a safety or deal and you being a safety professional, and why it's so important that you have to.

Speaker 1:

Your mind, body and soul have to be lined up and taken care of on a daily basis. I'll never discount the fact that living this life that we live today is easy, no matter what era, generation, decade that you were born. There's things that we go through each and every day that are just their life changing, their mind blowing. They're just it's a lot. And we, as servant leaders, each and every day we go to work, each and every day we deal with the people that we were supposed to be a resource for caring for. In such critical moments, we have to be at 100% to make those decisions so that they're not emotional, to make those decisions that are critical and making sure that that's the right move, that's the right decision, that's the right plan.

Speaker 1:

So the self-help side of it you really have to look at yourself and say, hey, I got to fix these things, and I'm not talking about fixing these things and you cut the tree at the trunk or you cut it at the branch or you cut it at the leaf, because even though you may do that, you may chop a big portion of it. Don't get me wrong. But what was going to happen is that that very same tree that was bearing the very same fruit, that wasn't conducive to your environment, that was unhealthy, that was stressful, that was causing mental issues, that was causing, maybe, some anxieties. Those things have to be chopped at the root of the problem, because if you don't get to the root of the problem, within side of you it'll continue to fester, it'll continue to grow. It may not be as big as before you cut it at the trunk, but every once in a while something is going to pop up that is going to keep you from being taking yourself to the next level.

Speaker 1:

So I'm really here to say to all of you listening right now, tune in, listen to the content, listen to the information that is going to be provided. I will tell you it's no magic stuff, there's no secret potion at what I'm going to tell you, but I can give you a secret, and the secret is the action. Nothing that I'm going to tell you is any good without the action of you the safety professional understanding that you are critical to a lot of people in your life and it's so important to be able to look at yourself, take care of yourself, work on yourself on a daily basis, have patience, be empowered and continue to change your life so you can continue to be that servant leader that several people, one person or anybody that's in your presence is going to be taking care of in the best possible way. But again, the secret is the action that you were going to take, whether it's reading a book, listening to a podcast, looking in the mirror, questioning yourself, praying on it if you're a believer, getting advice from a professional, getting advice from a friend, a family member, but doing something about that, that very thing that's holding you back right now, in this moment. And yes, I'm talking to you. I'm talking to you because you're still listening.
